Formula 1 has started evaluating several alternative venues to conclude the 2026 season after F1 CEO Stefano Domenicali confirmed a contingency plan is in place should the Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix be cancelled. The ongoing geopolitical instability in the Middle East has placed both season-ending races under increasing scrutiny from the FIA and Formula One Management.

The 2026 campaign was originally designed as a 24-race calendar, but the cancellation of the Bahrain and Saudi Arabian Grands Prix earlier this year due to the Iran-United States/Israel conflict has already significantly reduced the schedule. Although a ceasefire has been in place since early April, continued reports of sporadic attacks in the region have prevented Formula 1 from guaranteeing the operational and logistical security required for major international events later this year.

Domenicali has made clear that Formula 1 is determined to avoid losing additional races and is actively preparing replacement scenarios should Qatar and Abu Dhabi become impossible to host on November 29 and December 6.

“We have a contingency plan. If the two end-of-year races cannot take place because the war is not over, then we will have other alternatives,” Domenicali stated previously.

However, finding replacement venues at the end of the year presents a major challenge. Weather conditions, logistics, circuit availability, and scheduling conflicts with other sporting events severely limit Formula 1’s options during November and December.

One of the strongest possibilities would be keeping Formula 1 in North America following the Las Vegas Grand Prix. Circuit of The Americas in Austin and the Miami International Autodrome have emerged as potential candidates due to relatively manageable weather conditions late in the year.

Both options, however, face significant obstacles. Austin already hosts the United States Grand Prix on October 25, leaving only a five-week gap before a possible replacement date. Meanwhile in Miami, the use of Hard Rock Stadium for NFL events creates major complications because the Miami Dolphins’ home schedule clashes with potential Formula 1 dates.

The Mexico City Grand Prix has also been discussed as an option, although it faces similar challenges because the Mexican round is already scheduled for November 1. The short turnaround would create substantial logistical and operational difficulties for a second event.

Across Europe, most circuits are effectively ruled out by winter weather conditions. However, Portimao and Istanbul Park remain realistic possibilities after both venues previously returned to assist Formula 1 during the disrupted 2020 and 2021 Covid seasons.

Asia also presents major limitations. Cold weather conditions effectively eliminate Suzuka and Shanghai from consideration during December. That situation leaves Sepang International Circuit in Kuala Lumpur as one of the few viable alternatives, despite the Malaysian venue not hosting Formula 1 for the last nine years.

The situation highlights how complex the modern Formula 1 calendar structure has become, increasingly dependent on geopolitical stability, global climate conditions, and international logistical flexibility. With strong pressure to preserve race numbers and major commercial interests involved, the FIA and Formula One Management’s final decision regarding the conclusion of the 2026 season is expected to become one of the sport’s most significant issues in the coming months.
