Formula 1 has officially approved a plan to shorten race distances starting from the 2027 season. The decision was made at the latest F1 Commission meeting, marking a significant change to the grand prix format that will affect almost every circuit.
The Technical Reasons Behind the Cut
This change is not without reason. Starting in 2027, F1 will adopt a new generation of power units that alter the power split between the internal combustion engine (ICE) and electrical components. While the initial target was a 50:50 split, the reality is closer to 53:47 in favour of the ICE. With an increased fuel flow rate, this ratio will shift to 58:42 in 2027, and then to 60:40 in 2028.
Consequently, the fuel required to complete the same race distance will increase. Some teams might need to enlarge their fuel tanks, which would eat into cost cap money that could be spent elsewhere. To avoid such waste, the teams and the FIA agreed to reduce the total race distance from 305 km to 290 km. This equates to a reduction of two or three laps at each circuit, except for Monaco which already has the shortest distance at 260 km.
Impact and Next Steps
This decision still requires formal approval from the FIA World Motor Sport Council, which is scheduled to meet virtually on October 15. However, given that an agreement has been reached at the commission level, the process is expected to be a formality.
In addition to the race distance change, the F1 Commission meeting in London also agreed on several other points. One is the removal of the three-hour time limit for suspended races. Currently, there is a two-hour limit for actual racing, but there was a rule that the total time from the start could not exceed three hours if there were stoppages. The change is intended to increase the chance of a full race being completed even if disruptions occur.
Furthermore, greater flexibility to extend free practice sessions if they are interrupted was also approved. Gearbox homologation for 2027 has been removed, giving manufacturers including Aston Martin the freedom to improve their designs. Other minor changes to the 2027 technical regulations were also agreed, though details have not been disclosed.
With these changes, F1 aims to balance technical demands and financial sustainability while maintaining fierce competition. Fans may see slightly shorter races, but with intensity that remains high.
