The world of Formula 1 engineering is perpetually defined by brilliant minds finding microscopic gray areas in the rulebook to forge championship-contending machinery. However, the clever aerodynamic trick that has served Red Bull Racing so well is officially on borrowed time as governing bodies clamp down ahead of the 2027 season.
According to a report from AutoRacer.it, the FIA has officially initiated steps to shut down a clever aerodynamic loophole introduced by the Milton Keynes squad earlier this year, forcing the reigning powerhouse back to the drawing board for future vehicle designs.
To understand the root of the FIA's crackdown, one must analyze the lower sidepod geometry. Aerodynamicists traditionally crave knife-sharp edges on sidepod bodywork to carve through wake and feed clean airflow directly to the floor. However, technical regulations mandate a large minimum radius for these surfaces to prevent hazardous, sharp blade-like bodywork.

This is precisely where Red Bull's engineering department got creative. As renowned F1 technical analyst Craig Scarborough broke down on social media around the British Grand Prix, the team exploited a minor carve-out in the wording concerning a 'floor body stay'.
By fitting a structural cable running down the lower ridge of the sidepod—where regulations permit bodywork sitting directly near the support stay to feature a tiny 20mm radius—RB22 was able to mould a significantly sharper, more aggressive undercut than competitors running standard bodywork. The trick debuted at the Austrian Grand Prix and proved effective enough that Audi brazenly copied the innovation in Baku a few rounds later.
Unfortunately for the innovators and copycats alike, technical delegates are slamming the door shut for upcoming campaigns. AutoRacer.it indicates that the FIA is amending the 2027 technical regulations to restrict the floor support dimension down to a mere 5mm.

By slashing this tolerance, rulemakers are entirely neutralizing the loophole that allowed teams to wrap aggressive bodywork around the stay, requiring a complete redesign of the lower sidepod sections for 2027.
