A high-stakes legal battle has hit the Formula 1 paddock as Sentronics Holdings Ltd filed a formal lawsuit against Allengra in the US District Court for the Western District of Texas. The British firm, which served as the FIA’s exclusive fuel flow meter supplier from 2018 through 2025, claims that the advanced sensors currently fitted to every car on the grid infringe upon its core patents.
This major dispute erupted after the German manufacturer won the lucrative supply contract for the 2026 to 2030 seasons back in November 2024. Refusing to step down quietly, Sentronics has demanded a jury trial, alleging that Allengra’s newly adopted metering devices violate its US patent number 11,391,609, which was officially granted to the company back in July 2022.
Fuel flow meters play an indispensable role in modern Formula 1 by monitoring the exact amount of fuel reaching each engine, enabling the governing body to strictly police strict technical regulations. According to the legal complaint, Sentronics' patented ultrasonic technology operates by measuring how the propagation time of signals traveling through a fluid varies against the direction of the flow.

The plaintiff asserts that its own rigorous laboratory testing conducted in late 2024 confirmed the infringement. Furthermore, the company claims that technical specifications were previously shared under a non-disclosure agreement, while accusing Allengra of actively inducing the FIA and teams to utilize the contested hardware during races hosted across the United States.
Tensions have escalated following a formal demand letter sent by Sentronics' legal counsel which was subsequently disputed by US representatives for the German supplier. As the litigation moves forward, the former supplier is asking the court to permanently ban the distribution of the disputed meters in the US alongside substantial financial damages for lost profits and unpaid royalties.
