F1 2026 Mid-Season Grades: Alpine Stumbles After Strong Start

Alpine began the 2026 season with a competitive package powered by Mercedes. But that form faded in the first half, dropping the Enstone squad to sixth in the constructors' standings, five points behind Racing Bulls.

Last year was tough for Alpine. They sacrificed 2025 to focus fully on the new 2026 regulations. The result: the A526 surprised early on. Pierre Gasly and Franco Colapinto, who endured the difficult campaign, finally reaped the rewards. After a painful opener in Melbourne, Alpine went on to dominate the midfield battle.

Gasly regularly hit Q3, and the team scored points in seven consecutive grands prix. The highlight was a controversial Monaco podium—initially denied due to time penalties, then reinstated on appeal. Colapinto also grew more consistent, easing doubts about his long-term future.

Unfortunately, that positive run didn't last. Like Haas, Alpine was caught by midfield rivals. A consistent Racing Bulls snatched the 'best of the rest' status, while Audi made big strides. In Hungary, Alpine struggled to get out of Q2, a consequence of being out of sync on upgrades and lacking downforce.

A major upgrade package is expected at Zandvoort after the summer break. That will determine whether Alpine can reclaim the midfield lead or sink further.

Flavio Briatore, executive advisor, admitted the setback: "Racing Bulls scoring with both cars again has dropped us to sixth. We have to admit they've done a better job in this phase. Upgrades are coming soon, and we need big jumps. This should be extra motivation for Enstone to turn things around."
