However, a glimmer of hope emerged for the constructors' championship contenders as Kimi Antonelli delivered an impressive fourth-place finish in qualifying at the Singapore Grand Prix, outperforming his teammate George Russell who settled for sixth on the grid.
This performance gap is particularly significant because the young Italian driver opted to run the brand-new vehicle specification, while his experienced British teammate chose the older aerodynamic version. The promising newcomer explained that he chose the latest development package because he firmly believes it offers a much higher performance ceiling, provided the engineering crew can successfully unlock its hidden potential from the chassis.
Meanwhile, the sister car relied on the older specification version used prior to the recent rounds because it provided a more familiar and comfortable handling feel for the driver. Despite that comfort preference, the newer specification clearly demonstrated a tangible pace advantage, allowing the rookie to edge out his seasoned stablemate by a margin of two tenths of a second during the intense qualifying hour.
Reflecting on his performance during the qualifying session at the Marina Bay Circuit, the young talent noted that the team successfully managed to guide the car into a better operational window. Nevertheless, he issued a strong cautionary note, stating that the team remains heavily constrained by the limitations of the current setup because the working window of the updated aerodynamic package is still exceptionally narrow.
Detailing the handling behavior of his machine, the rising star pointed out that the vehicle balance fluctuates heavily depending on whether he is cruising to manage tires or attacking the corners aggressively. The car proves to be significantly more sensitive than its predecessor, causing sudden rear-end breakaways at certain low-speed turns while suffering from noticeable understeer when cornering speeds are pushed to the absolute limit.
Looking ahead to the upcoming race day, the driver emphasized that navigating through heavy traffic will present an entirely different challenge compared to the clean air experienced during qualifying. With limited long-run data gathered during practice due to changing track conditions, securing a strong start and executing a clean race strategy remain the primary focus in pursuit of a coveted podium finish.
