F1 2026 Analysis: Hamilton Explains Costly Setup Error in Singapore GP

A golden opportunity to lock out the front row slipped away from Ferrari at the Singapore Grand Prix after Lewis Hamilton admitted that a late setup adjustment pushed his car over the performance threshold during a tense Q3 qualifying shootout.

Having shown supreme pace through the opening knockout segments at the Marina Bay street circuit, the British driver looked poised to challenge for pole position after dominating the timesheets in both Q1 and Q2, where he became the first competitor to dip below the 1m32s barrier.

However, in a bid to extract even more performance from the machine, a minor front-wing flap adjustment drastically altered the aerodynamic balance. Instead of finding extra speed, the vehicle's handling became unpredictably sharp, leaving the driver wrestling with sudden oversteer during his final crucial flying laps.

"The car felt amazing in Q1 and Q2. And when I finished the laps, I was like, 'She's got more in her,'" he explained regarding the pivotal garage decision. "The only way to try and extract that is to try and add wing. And in doing so, I think it just tipped it over the edge. It was only one hole of adjustment or something like that. But it's like it was on the knife-edge. And after that, then the car was just snappy and none of the laps in Q3 were any good."

The aerodynamic instability was clearly visible as the Ferrari suffered massive snaps at Turn 3, forcing aggressive steering corrections through the final chicane. This allowed Max Verstappen to snatch pole position by a razor-thin margin, while team-mate Charles Leclerc slotted into second ahead of the disgruntled veteran.

Reporting from Motorsport.com highlights how the rapid track evolution inherent to temporary street venues caught the team out when reacting to changing grip levels. Despite the late setback, starting from the second row provides a solid foundation for the upcoming race.
