Esteban Ocon has officially ruled out competing in any other motorsport category if he fails to secure a Formula 1 seat for the 2027 season. The 30-year-old French driver is currently fighting to preserve his premier class career after Haas confirmed his departure from the American squad at the conclusion of the current campaign.
Ocon made it abundantly clear that his sole ambition remains within Formula 1. With the only unconfirmed grid slots outside of Haas residing at Red Bull sister outfit Racing Bulls, and given Red Bull's traditional preference for promoting junior talents, Ocon appears destined for at least a temporary hiatus from a full-time race seat.
When questioned about his potential alternative career paths if his F1 journey is temporarily halted, Ocon delivered a resolute response. According to Crash.net, he stated: Formula 1. That is where I deserve to be. If I look at the results and what I have shown in Formula 1, I deserve to be in Formula 1. Of course, there are other categories which are fantastic as well. But I want to be racing in Formula 1, in the next five, seven years. That is what I want to be. So I will keep pushing to be in that position. In the near future, that is the only thing I am looking at so far.
Pressed further on whether he would accept a reserve or third driver capacity with an established constructor, Ocon acknowledged it as a viable fallback plan. Yes. If there are no possibilities to race next year, that is what I will do. I am still working on it, still discussing. When I have more news I will announce something definitely, but at the moment, full focus is on this weekend, he explained.
This scenario draws heavy parallels to Ocon's career trajectory in 2019, when he was left without a permanent drive following Force India's takeover by Lawrence Stroll and the subsequent arrival of Lance Stroll. He spent that year as a reserve driver for Mercedes before returning to the grid with Renault in 2020. Despite facing internal pressure from teammate Ollie Bearman at Haas, the 2021 Hungarian Grand Prix winner firmly believes he still has unfinished business at the pinnacle of motorsport.
