Haas team principal Ayao Komatsu has admitted that the abrupt decision to dismiss Esteban Ocon before the conclusion of the Formula 1 season sent shockwaves through the entire squad. The internal fallout erupted following a high-profile disagreement over run plans during Friday practice at the Autodromo Hermanos Rodriguez, involving a broadcasted radio exchange between the driver and race engineer Laura Mueller.
Addressing the garage crew ahead of the Mexican Grand Prix weekend, Komatsu acknowledged the immediate astonishment among engineers and mechanics. "On Saturday morning when I had to tell the boys and girls here, 'Esteban's not driving anymore, Ryo is in the car', of course everybody was surprised," Komatsu stated. While emphasizing his usual commitment to internal transparency, the team boss noted that certain confidential aspects of the departure could not be publicly elaborated.
Following Ocon's sudden sidelined status, reserve driver Ryo Hirakawa stepped in for the remainder of the Mexico weekend, while 2027 team recruit Rafael Camara makes his high-profile F1 debut alongside Oliver Bearman at the current Brazilian GP weekend. Komatsu reflected that managing the complex situation over their two-year working relationship served as a continuous learning curve in driver management.
Meanwhile, Bearman finds himself thrust into the de facto team leader role alongside rookie teammates, though he insists his competitive mindset remains unchanged. "Of course it's strange not having Esteban here, and it's obviously a challenging situation for everybody," Bearman reflected regarding the sudden personnel shifts within the technical setup.
Looking ahead to the competitive dynamics with his new garage partner, Bearman expressed optimism about the technical push. "Honestly, I'm excited to have a teammate that's going to push me really hard," he concluded, highlighting the collaborative development push for the American outfit heading toward future seasons.
