Marcus Ericsson emerged victorious in the inaugural IndyCar race at Markham's street circuit on Sunday, surging into the lead with five laps remaining to claim his fifth career win by a margin of over seven seconds.
The race on the narrow track had a bit of everything: six cautions, trouble for the favorites, and nearly a first-time winner. Romain Grosjean almost held on for his maiden win but slipped to second, while Will Power rounded out the podium after starting from the back of the field.
The opening laps were relatively incident-free, despite drivers running four-wide at times on a circuit barely wide enough to accommodate. But the chaos soon unfolded, with six caution periods and multiple damaging incidents that forced Louis Foster and seven others to retire early.
Ericsson's victory was a redemption of sorts after earlier setbacks, and the 51 points he collected strengthen his grip on the championship lead. The win also underscored the unpredictability of new street circuits, with drivers set to tackle another brand-new venue next weekend in the nation's capital.
