MotoGP, Sportrik Media - Enea Bastianini of Red Bull KTM Tech3 arrives at the Spanish MotoGP 2026 in Jerez facing both performance pressure and uncertainty over his future, as he evaluates his position within KTM’s project ahead of the 2027 rider market shifts.
Following a near month-long break caused by the cancellation of the Qatar round, Bastianini returns to competition with renewed physical and mental energy. However, he acknowledged that the extended pause will lead to a demanding second half of the season, with a compressed sequence of races requiring careful management.
“The break helped me recharge. I had time to go home and focus on personal things after being away for so long,” Bastianini explained.

“But it also means the end of the season will be very intense, with many consecutive races that we will have to manage carefully.”
From a performance standpoint, the Italian identified clear progress during the United States Grand Prix in Austin, attributing improvements primarily to tyre characteristics rather than significant changes to the bike itself. The return to a more familiar tyre specification appears to have stabilised performance and provided a more predictable platform.
“I think we improved a lot in Austin. The bike was very similar, but what really changed was the tyres because we returned to our standard.”
“Here in Jerez we will have the same specification, and that can help us start well. Usually, the first impact makes the difference—if we start well, we can maintain that level throughout the weekend.”
Bastianini also pointed to Jerez as a circuit that could better suit his current package, particularly with an additional year of experience on the KTM machine compared to his first visit with the bike. Nevertheless, he remains cautious due to unresolved technical issues such as chatter, which previously affected performance at this venue.
“Jerez can be a friendly track. Last year it was my first time here with KTM, now I have one more year of experience with the bike.”
“But we suffered a lot with chatter here, so we will have to see how things develop.”
Beyond immediate performance considerations, Bastianini’s long-term future remains a central topic. While he holds a 2+1 year contract that could extend to 2028, he acknowledged that its continuation is not guaranteed, and that his current results have not met expectations.
“I’m pleased that people are talking about my future, but what I have achieved so far is not what I set as my goal.”
“Since joining KTM there have been difficulties, and even now I sometimes struggle to be competitive.”
He emphasised that inconsistent results—particularly starting positions outside the front group—do not reflect either his ambitions or the potential of the package, reinforcing the need to improve consistency over the remainder of the season.
“When I start so far back, it’s not what I expect, and not what the bike expects either.”
“We have to try to maintain a good level for the rest of the championship, and it’s not impossible.”
In terms of the rider market, Bastianini confirmed that multiple options are under consideration, with a potential return to Gresini Racing emerging as one of the scenarios, although no final decision has been made.
“I’m evaluating many things, and honestly there could be a surprise. Nothing is decided yet. This week we need to understand some things and then I will make a decision about my future.”
The situation is further complicated by structural developments within KTM, including potential changes to its MotoGP presence that could reduce available seats. This intensifies internal competition, with riders such as Maverick Vinales and Fabio Di Giannantonio also linked to possible moves within the manufacturer’s structure.
The Spanish Grand Prix at Jerez therefore represents a critical juncture for Bastianini, not only to improve his competitive standing but also to strengthen his position in an increasingly dynamic rider market ahead of the MotoGP 2027 regulatory transition.
