The WRC 2026 season concluded with an unforgettable title thriller that was decided in the final kilometers of the rally. Elfyn Evans and Scott Martin secured the drivers' and co-drivers' world championships following a dramatic final-stage twist that completely altered the standings.
Heading into the deciding powerstage, the championship battle hung in the balance with just a single point separating the main contenders. Oliver Solberg held the overall rally lead while Evans was fighting back from a puncture incurred on the penultimate test, setting up a winner-take-all showdown on the final test.
The tension boiled over when Solberg, well on course to secure the championship crown, suffered a costly oversteer moment along the iconic Argentiera coastline with only two corners remaining. The mistake sent his car spearing off the road and into the dunes within sight of the finish line.

Although Solberg recovered to finish the rally in first place overall, the time lost dropped him behind Evans on the powerstage classification. That crucial swing handed the world championship title to the Welshman in one of the most astonishing climaxes in motorsport history.
Speaking to DirtFish, Evans admitted he had effectively conceded defeat after completing his own run, believing his chances had slipped away before the late drama unfolded.
