Motorsport history witnessed one of its most breathtaking climaxes as Elfyn Evans and co-driver Scott Martin claimed the 2026 World Rally Championship crowns. The season finale in Sardinia delivered raw emotion and unprecedented tension, with the title fight boiling down to a winner-takes-all showdown on the Wolf Power Stage.
The championship pendulum swung wildly throughout the final day. Evans suffered a puncture just 4km into the penultimate stage, forcing him to stop and dropping him out of the Super Sunday points. It seemed like heartbreak for the Toyota stalwart before the ultimate twist of fate unfolded.
With victory seemingly in hand, rival Oliver Solberg went off the road just three corners from the finish line despite holding a commanding time advantage at the final split. The dramatic error handed the championship back to Evans, who ultimately secured the title by a margin of five points.
"It has not sunk in just yet. I was quite sure it was over. I threw everything at it," reflected Evans after the emotional finish. Co-driver Scott Martin echoed the sentiment, reminding fans that rally is truly never over until the final flying finish.
While Solberg took the rally win ahead of Sebastien Ogier, the day belonged to the resilient Welsh crew as the Rally1 era drew to a thrilling close in unforgettable fashion.
