Elfyn Evans Leads Rally Japan SS2, Capitalizes on Road Position

Toyota driver Elfyn Evans has seized the lead in Rally Japan following a dominant performance at the Isegami’s Tunnel Special Stage (SS). Evans set the benchmark time, beating Oliver Solberg by 7.5 seconds, which allowed him to climb from fourth place into the overall lead.

Technically, Evans' significant advantage was heavily influenced by his "road position" or starting order. The Isegami’s Tunnel stage remained damp in places due to overnight rain, and as more cars traversed the route, additional dirt was dragged onto the road, making the surface increasingly slippery for subsequent drivers. This created a substantial performance gap based on the order of departure.

Evans managed to maintain a consistent rhythm despite the difficulty in judging grip. By starting in an advantageous position, he minimized the impact of the accumulating debris on the track, securing more stable traction than his rivals who started later. His ability to keep the car balanced on a low-grip surface was the deciding factor in this stage.

The rest of the field suffered drastic time losses as the track degraded. Sébastien Ogier dropped 16.7 seconds, while Thierry Neuville lost 22.6 seconds. Takamoto Katsuta and Sami Pajari were hit even harder, losing 25.9 and 26.1 seconds respectively.

Ogier bluntly attributed the gap to the road position, expressing visible frustration during interviews. He emphasized that the dynamic shift in track grip—deteriorating as more cars passed through—was the primary reason for the loss of time. This confirms that on damp asphalt, starting order can be as influential as the vehicle setup itself.

The impact of SS2 on the standings was severe, with Sami Pajari dropping from second to fifth place. Pajari now trails fourth-placed Thierry Neuville by 1.5 seconds. This wide variance in times underscores that risk management and the ability to adapt to declining grip were the most critical factors in the Isegami’s Tunnel stage.

With four more special stages remaining on Friday, Toyota aims to protect Evans' lead. The team's focus will remain on tire management and adapting to the slippery asphalt surfaces before the event concludes on Sunday.
