The Dutch Grand Prix at Zandvoort was brought to a halt with a red flag at the start of lap two after Max Verstappen suffered a heavy crash at the final corner. The incident occurred in what is the last Dutch GP for the foreseeable future, as Zandvoort relinquishes its place on the F1 calendar.
Verstappen lost control of his RB22 while navigating the final corner and went into the barriers, forcing an immediate suspension of the race due to the amount of debris and the precarious position of the car. The Dutchman quickly reported to his team that he was unhurt in the accident.
Pre-race rain had left the track damp, but it had dried enough for all 22 drivers to start on slick tyres. However, cars were kicking up substantial spray through the final two corners, and Verstappen crashed hard from seventh place after having a bit of wheel-to-wheel contact with stand-in team-mate Liam Lawson earlier in the lap.

There was also a huge spin for Gabriel Bortoleto through the same corner, but he avoided the barriers and was able to continue in his Audi. At the time of the incident, Lando Norris was leading the race ahead of Kimi Antonelli.
This crash is a major blow for Verstappen, who was racing in front of his home crowd. Expectations were high for a strong performance at Zandvoort, but this incident ended his hopes of a podium finish in what could be his last race there for a while. Red Bull now faces a race against time to repair the car before the restart.
The red flag provides a pause for track marshals to clear the debris, and also opens strategic opportunities for teams to change tyres or make adjustments. With the track still damp in some sectors, strategic calls will be crucial when racing resumes.
