Alex Dunne delivered a flawless drive to win the opening Formula 2 feature race in Baku, converting pole position into a commanding victory. The Rodin Motorsport driver controlled the race from start to finish, never allowing his rivals a sniff of the lead.
Controlled Victory
Dunne immediately pulled away at the start and by lap three had already broken the DRS gap, leading teammate Martinius Stenshorne by 1.4 seconds. Behind them, Noel Leon and Rafael Camara battled for position, but Dunne's pace was relentless.
Pre-Race Drama
The race was delayed when Sebastian Montoya spun at Turn 2 on the way to the grid and could not restart, forcing him to watch from the sidelines. The setback did not faze Dunne, who kept his focus and led the field away.
Pit Stops and Safety Car
As the pit window opened on lap seven, championship leader Tsolov was among the first to stop but struggled to rejoin, losing positions to Van Hoepen and Inthraphuvusak. Chaos ensued when Prema's Mari Boya stopped at the exit of Turn 2, triggering a safety car. The top five all dived for the pits, with only Oliver Goethe and Colton Herta staying out. Dunne's 4.4-second advantage over Camara allowed him to rejoin second, splitting the two.
Red Flag and Attrition
A massive incident occurred when Cian Shields sent John Bennett heavily into the wall. Duerksen, Tsolov, Van Hoepen, and Villagomez were also involved. The track was blocked, and the race was red-flagged. When racing resumed, only 14 cars remained. Goethe still led but had yet to make his mandatory stop.
Dunne Takes the Lead
With 10 minutes to go, Dunne finally passed Goethe into Turn 1. Teammate Stenshorne also got by Beganovic. Goethe's tyres dropped off dramatically, and with six minutes left, he locked up at Turn 3 and tumbled down the order. Dunne held on to win, while Camara snatched fourth from Leon at the line to retain the championship lead by eight points over Dunne.
Title Fight Heats Up
The victory propels Dunne fully into contention for the title, now just eight points behind Camara. The three-way battle is intensifying as the season progresses, with Stenshorne also in the mix. Baku marked a turning point for Dunne, who showed maturity and speed.
