Pecco Bagnaia continues to struggle with inconsistent performances in the 2026 MotoGP season. The Ducati rider has yet to find his best form, and the team has reportedly gone to extreme lengths to help him.
According to former MotoGP crew chief Ramon Forcada, speaking on the Duralvita podcast, Ducati has tried everything possible, including ideas deemed irrational. "From what I've discussed with the Ducati team, they've tested everything, even things that seem irrational, things where you'd say, 'That's never going to work,' but they test them anyway," he said.
Bagnaia's main complaint is a lack of rear grip. However, no other Ducati rider has suffered from the same issue. "The issue is that they've tried it all, like the large brake discs from last year, absolutely everything possible," Forcada added. "Sometimes it actually makes things worse – performance drops – but it's incredibly difficult for a technician when a rider complains the bike isn't working right, and you have to tell them, 'No, you have to ride it exactly as it is, don't change a thing.' That's a tough spot to be in."
Since MotoGP returned to action in early August, Bagnaia has crashed in three of the last four races. He finished only seventh in Austria, and now enters this weekend's Japanese Grand Prix with over a year since his last grand prix win.
Tensions flared at the San Marino Grand Prix. DAZN cameras caught a conversation between Bagnaia and fellow Ducati rider Fabio Di Giannantonio. Di Giannantonio suggested that Bagnaia try a basic setup on his bike, to which Bagnaia replied, "They won't let me." Bagnaia later claimed his comments were taken out of context and was furious with DAZN for airing the conversation.
Ducati is in a difficult position. On one hand, they must listen to their rider's complaints, but on the other, they know that the requested changes might not yield results. "Even if you know, and tell them, that what they want to do won't work, you still have to give them the chance to test it," Forcada explained.
With the season winding down, the pressure is mounting on Bagnaia and Ducati to find a solution. Can they turn things around? Only time will tell, and the Japanese Grand Prix could be a crucial moment.
