Great news for racing fans who love behind-the-scenes drama. Netflix has officially confirmed that Formula 1: Drive to Survive will return for a ninth season, this time covering the ongoing 2026 season.
The docuseries, which first premiered in 2019, has become a window for viewers to peek into the paddock and the drivers' personal lives beyond the track. Through access rarely given to other media, Netflix has managed to bring audiences closer to the atmosphere of Formula 1.
James Gay-Rees and Paul Martin, executive producers at Box to Box, expressed their excitement. "We're so excited to be making Season 9 of this iconic show. This year we're going to go deeper than ever before into the hidden spaces of this fantastic sport," they said.
Despite criticism over creative editing that some say exaggerates drama, the series' impact on the popularity of Formula 1 cannot be denied. Drive to Survive is credited with boosting fan growth in the United States and attracting a younger, more diverse audience, including a higher proportion of women.
Gay-Rees previously spoke about that impact in an interview with F1.com in 2023. "Genuinely, we are enormously proud to be a part of it. There's also a lot of satisfaction at being first with these things, and I think that it kind of does feel like the first main access show – certainly out of the UK anyway – that has had this profound effect," he said.
He also highlighted the changing demographics. "We've all had the statistics about the changing, younger demographic. Bringing such a big new audience to a sport – which obviously was deserved, it just needed somebody to open it up – is massively satisfying. The fact that it wasn't a fluke, the fact that it's grown... It's a real honour and we love it," he added.
Fan Excitement
The announcement was met with euphoria from fans. The ninth season is expected to premiere in 2027, and comments on social media are already flooding in. "The Aston Martin episode will be Absolute Television," one fan commented on the official Netflix UK Instagram account. "Looking forward to the DTS marathon," another wrote.
For Liberty Media, the success of Drive to Survive proves that investing in entertainment pays off. The 2026 season itself promises many intriguing storylines, from technical regulation changes to increasingly fierce competition among teams.
