Doohan Admits Tricky Alpine Spell, Targets Racing Return

Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Jack Doohan has revealed the final months of his time with Alpine were “tricky”, but he insists the experience provided a crucial foundation for his bid to return to a full-time Formula 1 race seat.

The Australian driver received his F1 opportunity at the end of 2024, stepping in for Esteban Ocon at the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix. Over the following winter, team advisor Flavio Briatore signed Franco Colapinto, despite the Argentinian’s crash-affected end to his campaign with Williams.

Doohan nonetheless started the 2025 season as a race driver alongside Pierre Gasly, but was replaced by Colapinto after just six grands prix. He reverted to a reserve driver role before being released by the team at the end of the year.

For 2026, Doohan has been confirmed as reserve driver at Haas, once again sitting behind Ocon and Oliver Bearman in the team’s driver line-up. He described the new role as a fresh start after a challenging period.

“Six races, like anything, are great in Formula 1. I thoroughly enjoyed it. Environment and atmosphere were tricky nonetheless, and what followed was also not ideal,” said Doohan.

“But we lived it out and learned an extreme amount. We have a bigger foundation to grow from, and hopefully when I can return to Formula 1, I’ll take everything I learned – the hard way – and put it into practice.”

Doohan also confirmed that returning to racing remains his top priority. He recently completed an LMP2 test with Algarve Pro Racing and is evaluating opportunities in the European Le Mans Series and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, while continuing his reserve duties with Haas ahead of the upcoming Formula 1 season.
