Domenicali: German GP Could Return to F1 Calendar

Stefano Domenicali, President and CEO of Formula 1, has hinted that the German Grand Prix could make a comeback to the championship calendar "in the medium term". This is welcome news for fans longing for the likes of Hockenheim and the Nurburgring.

F1 last raced in Germany during the pandemic-hit 2020 season, when the Nurburgring hosted the Eifel Grand Prix. The official German Grand Prix was last held in 2019 at Hockenheim. Since then, Germany has been absent from the calendar as F1 increasingly shifts towards the American and Middle Eastern markets.

However, the resurgence of interest in F1 in Germany is partly due to two major manufacturers: Mercedes and Audi, the latter set to enter as a factory team in 2026. Mercedes has been a dominant force during the V6 turbo-hybrid era.

Speaking on a call with Wall Street investors, Domenicali stated that Germany is an important and potential market. "I think now Germany wants us to think in the medium term if they can come back into the calendar or, even more important, being one of the most important markets for Formula 1 like it was 20 years ago," he said.

He also noted that the dynamics in Germany are starting to move in a positive direction. "The new situation in Germany is starting to move in a direction where I see Germany potentially being a very interesting market in the future, both on the media side and the promoter side. It will not be a short-term call, but it will definitely happen," Domenicali explained.

European venues have proven crucial in recent years. Silverstone, Mugello, and the Nurburgring are examples of circuits that stepped in to replace cancelled races in 2020. This season, Imola is on standby to host the season finale if the Qatar and Abu Dhabi Grands Prix are cancelled due to the Middle East conflict. Portimao has also offered to host a late-year race.

The return of the German Grand Prix would be great news for loyal fans who miss the unique atmosphere of German circuits. With the support of major manufacturers and growing interest, it is not impossible that we will see the German Grand Prix back in the coming years.
