The future of Formula 1 is once again generating massive excitement as former grand prix driver David Coulthard has strongly hinted that an official announcement regarding the sport's long-awaited return to Africa is imminent.
Speaking on the Up To Speed podcast alongside co-host Will Buxton, David Coulthard teased that he believes an announcement confirming the addition of an African round to the calendar is coming soon. The discussion also touched upon potential calendar slots, given the packed 24-race schedule and the inclusion of other historic venues.
Reflecting on logistical challenges and venue rotations, David Coulthard noted regarding Portimao, "Portimao has got a couple of years. Great track for the drivers. We went there, I think, under COVID, so we didn't have an issue with spectators. We're curious to know how many people will turn up there." Building on the calendar talks, he added, "I'm hearing rumours that we'll have an announcement for Africa soon. So, we're going to be going to Africa."
This sentiment builds upon previous remarks made by Formula 1 CEO Stefano Domenicali, who earlier stated that negotiations regarding a grand prix in Africa were progressing very well alongside other global expansion talks in South America and the Far East.
Meanwhile, seven-time world champion Lewis Hamilton has been a vocal proponent of bringing the championship back to the continent. Having fought behind the scenes for years to secure a race in Africa, Lewis Hamilton remains determined to race there before hanging up his helmet, emphasizing that every other major continent hosts a round except Africa.
