Daniel Ricciardo has admitted he has not completely ruled out a future return to racing despite currently enjoying life away from Formula 1. The former Racing Bulls driver explained that if he ever competes again, the decision would be motivated more by personal enjoyment rather than the pursuit of championships.
Ricciardo lost his Formula 1 seat midway through the 2024 season when Racing Bulls unexpectedly replaced him with Liam Lawson. The decision shocked much of the paddock given Ricciardo’s popularity and his successful Formula 1 career, which included eight grand prix victories, primarily during his time with Red Bull Racing.
Since stepping away from Formula 1, Ricciardo has frequently been linked to several motorsport categories including Australian Supercars, NASCAR, and IndyCar. The 36-year-old Australian now serves as a global ambassador for Ford Racing while enjoying a quieter lifestyle away from the pressure of full-time elite competition.
“I’m really enjoying life without constantly competing and being on stage all the time. I don’t want to say never because you never know what the future holds,” Ricciardo said.
Ricciardo explained that his perspective on racing changed during the final phase of his Formula 1 career. He felt that the constant pressure to prove himself and chase results gradually reduced the natural enjoyment that originally made him fall in love with motorsport.
According to Ricciardo, if he eventually returns to racing, he wants the experience to be approached with far less pressure and expectation. He no longer feels the need to collect trophies or championships to validate his career achievements.
“If I ever do something again one day, it would definitely be from the enjoyment side rather than chasing a championship. I don’t feel like I need to prove anything anymore,” he added.
Ricciardo also admitted that spending time away from motorsport helped him rebuild a healthier relationship with racing. After distancing himself from the Formula 1 paddock and media spotlight, he now feels more comfortable attending race events without carrying the weight of major expectations.
Although there are currently no concrete signs of a comeback, Ricciardo is still expected to remain an attractive figure for multiple global racing categories. With his Formula 1 experience, international popularity, and strong connection to Ford Racing, the possibility of Ricciardo returning to competitive motorsport remains open in the coming years.
