Dani Holgado, who will join Gresini Racing next season, and future Honda rider David Alonso have been spotted testing CFMoto's highly anticipated V4 SR-RR superbike. Footage has emerged showing the two young talents riding the camouflaged prototype.
The test was conducted by CFMoto and the Aspar race team, which also brought along Moto3 rider Maximo Quilles. The bike was dressed in a camouflage livery to hide details of the new prototype. The presence of Holgado and Alonso adds significant weight to the expectations surrounding the Chinese manufacturer's ambitious project.
Earlier this summer, the CFMoto V4 SR-RR recorded a top speed of 315.82 km/h (196.2 mph). For context, the all-time MotoGP top speed record, set by Jorge Martin aboard his factory Aprilia RS-GP at Mugello earlier this year, is only 32.8 mph faster. This makes the V4 SR-RR the top speed record holder for a Chinese combustion engine motorcycle.
While the V4 SR-RR will arrive on the market at some stage, there's a bigger picture regarding racing. With MotoGP moving to 850cc engines in 2027, and the V4 SR-RR likely to become the company's new flagship race bike, the 997cc machine could be heading for a future in WorldSBK. If that happens, CFMoto would become the first Chinese manufacturer to compete in the premier class of world championship racing, making the V4 SR-RR the first bike to achieve that feat.
It's no secret that CFMoto has interest in competing beyond Moto2 and Moto3, with both MotoGP and WorldSBK previously rumoured as possibilities. However, the route to MotoGP appears much tougher at the moment, especially since KTM's spot in MotoGP looks safe after the Austrian company overcame its recent financial crisis. KTM also recently agreed to the new manufacturers' commercial agreement alongside Ducati, Aprilia, Honda, and Yamaha, keeping all five brands in the sport for the next five years.
With the MotoGP landscape increasingly locked down, WorldSBK represents a more realistic entry point for CFMoto. This move is not only strategically sound from a business perspective but also signals serious intent from the Chinese manufacturer to compete on the world stage. The test involving young riders like Holgado and Alonso shows that CFMoto is serious about developing its racing product, while giving young talents a chance to experience a high-powered machine.
For Holgado, who will partner Joan Mir at Gresini, testing this superbike could be valuable preparation before stepping up to MotoGP. Meanwhile, Alonso, who will ride for Honda, also gains useful technical insight. The collaboration with Aspar further strengthens the indication that CFMoto wants to build a strong foundation from the junior ranks to the premier class.
All eyes are now on CFMoto's next move. If the V4 SR-RR does head to WorldSBK, the competition in the superbike class will become even more intriguing with the arrival of a new force from China. And for fans, this test offers a tantalising glimpse of what might unfold on the world racing grid in the years to come.
