Formula 1, Sportrik Media - Williams Racing has reunited with its 1996 Formula 1 world champion Damon Hill as an Official Ambassador, marking the 30th anniversary of his title-winning campaign.

Hill’s return to Grove revives one of the most successful partnerships in the team’s history. After serving two seasons as a test and reserve driver, he secured a full-time race seat in 1993 and claimed his maiden grand prix victory in Hungary. In 1994, he helped deliver the constructors’ championship and narrowly missed out on the drivers’ title following a controversial season-ending clash with Michael Schumacher.

Redemption arrived in 1996 when Hill captured eight victories on his way to the world championship, sealing the crown with a decisive win in Japan. In doing so, he became the first son of an F1 world champion to claim the title himself. Across four seasons with Williams, Hill recorded 21 grand prix wins, 20 pole positions and 19 fastest laps, cementing his legacy during one of the team’s golden eras.

Reflecting on his return, Hill said: “Williams is truly a special place for me and where some of the defining moments of my career took place.”

“I feel incredibly lucky to have been part of this sport and to have achieved what I did, and returning as an Ambassador is a real privilege. It’s an opportunity to celebrate the team's history and help to support its legacy and future.”

For 2026, Hill strengthens Williams’ ambassadorial line-up, replacing Jenson Button, who has moved to Aston Martin. He joins former team-mate Jacques Villeneuve, the 1997 world champion who raced alongside Hill during the mid-1990s.

Three-time W Series champion Jamie Chadwick also continues in her ambassadorial role while supporting the team’s latest F1 Academy recruit. Together, the group represents both Williams’ historic achievements and its future development ambitions.

Team principal James Vowles underlined the significance of Hill’s comeback, stating: “It’s an honour to welcome Damon back to Atlassian Williams F1 Team as an Ambassador.”

“Few individuals represent this team quite like him. Damon played a defining role in one of the most successful eras in our history, becoming a World Champion with Williams and leaving a legacy that continues to inspire the team today.”

As Williams continues its long-term rebuilding project, Hill’s return reinforces the connection between its championship heritage and its ambition to compete once again at the highest level of Formula 1.
