Max Verstappen is now regarded as one of the greatest drivers in Formula 1 history. But long before the F1 spotlight, there was a moment at a karting track that left a manufacturer boss instantly awestruck.
Giancarlo Tinini, the Italian owner of kart chassis maker CRG, has opened up about Verstappen's early career. He was at Monza as a guest of the Verstappen family, sharing stories with Dutch media.
An Undeniable Signal of Talent
Tinini vividly recalls the first time he saw a young Verstappen on track. At that point, Max was too young to officially race internationally, yet his performance was already mesmerizing.
"I saw a CRG kart with number 3, without any real stickers, just the name 'Max,'" Tinini remembered. "I had no idea who it was, but I was impressed. I wanted to find out who he was right away, ran into Jos, and asked if he was one of his drivers."
Jos Verstappen's answer was surprising: "Well, no, this is my son." From that moment, Tinini immediately offered Max a spot on his team, as his talent was already evident.
Professionalism from a Young Age
Verstappen signed a factory contract with CRG in November 2009. Tinini already knew the Verstappen family, but he never expected to find such a gem.
"What stands out most is Max's enormous drive to race. He always wanted to push the limits, in every situation," Tinini said. "Even when he was very young, he was incredibly professional and focused. It was clear he wasn't just there to drive a few laps."
The year 2013 was the peak of their time together. Verstappen claimed two European titles and one world title, though his quest for another world crown in the KF class was derailed by a collision.
For Tinini, Verstappen is one of CRG's best ambassadors. "We're all very proud that he was part of our team and of what we've achieved together," he concluded.
