A 22-year-old racer was an innocent bystander in the multi-car incident at the start of Race 2 in Townsville, hitting the outside wall heavily before being collected by more cars. The crash left his car, run by Jones Motorsport, damaged beyond repair and declared a total write-off, while the driver himself sustained several injuries.

After being transported to Townsville hospital, Taylor was diagnosed with three fractured ribs and a fractured knee. He was then sent home to Melbourne after an overnight stay to focus on his full recovery.

“That was a big one, a hard hit, but the track safety personnel and hospital staff were all wonderful, and I was discharged pretty quickly,” Taylor said. “I've since had further medical follow-ups at home and I'm well on the road to recovery.”

With just two rounds remaining in the season, losing the car was a disappointing setback. The 991.2 generation Cup Car used in Sprint Challenge will make way for 992.1-spec machinery next year, as cars move down from Carrera Cup to make way for the latest model.

“We have had the 992 for a few months now and completed a number of successful tests alongside Harri Jones [team principal], and I like it a lot,” Taylor added. “Plans are to be back on track and testing mid-October to be fully ready for next year. This setback hasn't changed the destination – it's just sharpened my focus.”

Taylor was diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) and ADHD at age 17, and races as an ambassador for the neurodiverse community. Under the guidance of team owner Harri Jones – a two-time Carrera Cup champion – and former Supercars full-timer Fabian Coulthard, Taylor remains fully focused on building towards his 2027 campaign.

Porsche Michelin Sprint Challenge returns for its penultimate round at Sydney Motorsport Park on September 18-20 as part of the Shannons SpeedSeries.
