Former Formula 1 strategist Bernie Collins has issued a stark warning to Williams that the team will face a heavy financial burden if its intra-team collision at the Dutch Grand Prix were to be repeated.
Williams arrived at Zandvoort in high spirits after confirming new deals for Carlos Sainz and Alex Albon, ending long-standing speculation about Sainz's future. However, the weekend turned sour when the duo collided approaching Turn 1 late in the race.
Sainz took responsibility for the clash, and the pair's relationship remained intact. Yet, the damage to both FW48s will have presented Williams with a hefty repair bill—a significant blow for a team already struggling financially and technically.
Collins, now a pundit on Sky Sports F1, stressed that the first rule within a team is not to hit your teammate. She highlighted Williams' overweight and underperforming car, as well as their difficulty in bringing upgrades due to budget constraints. "We hear Mercedes saying they don't have enough money to bring upgrades. You just can't lose the parts, the performance, the knowledge," she said.
Williams is set to earn less money from the Constructors' Championship compared to last year, along with the overall costs of the new regulations. Collins cited Mercedes boss Toto Wolff's admission about tightening the budget as an example that Williams must avoid such an incident again.
"Whether it comes out of their pay packet or not doesn't matter because it's already out of the budget. You can't put it back into the budget and say, 'Oh, the drivers have subbed this bit of the budget.' It doesn't work like that," Collins asserted.
She also pointed out Williams' lack of performance at Zandvoort, with only Fernando Alonso pursuing a different strategy. "The performance was lacking, and it just seems the car wasn't the right weight, and it wasn't delivered on time, and it didn't have the right performance. So, there's lots going on in the background of Williams there," she concluded.
