Franco Colapinto found himself at the center of an FIA stewards' controversy after receiving two penalties during the Dutch Grand Prix, drawing sharp criticism from both the Argentine driver and a senior executive at Mercado Libre, his main Formula 1 sponsor.
The Alpine driver was handed a drive-through penalty for an infringement under yellow flags at the start of the race. The incident occurred as Colapinto was overtaking Yuki Tsunoda, just as Max Verstappen crashed ahead, triggering yellow flags. Colapinto couldn't avoid completing the pass, which the stewards deemed a violation.
The penalty effectively ended his hopes of scoring points after he had climbed into the top ten early on. Arvid Lindblad received the same penalty for a similar move on Pierre Gasly.

Colapinto expressed his frustration to Motorsport.com: "It's tricky to judge in those conditions when you're fighting on lap one, making a move and it's all wet and damp on the banking, with parts of the car flying around. I saw a very late yellow flag when I was finishing my overtake, and it was clearly more dangerous to slam on the brakes in the middle of the straight, on the banking and in the wet."
The 23-year-old felt the stewards were too rigid: "They have been extremely harsh. It's their job, but it's also their job to be flexible and understand the situation. A drive-through kills your race. It feels too much."
Later, Colapinto received a second penalty—a 10-second time penalty—for another infringement during a yellow-flag period, along with three penalty points on his license, bringing his total to four.
Mercado Libre's executive hit out at the FIA stewards, calling the decisions unreasonable and damaging to young drivers. This criticism adds to growing pressure on the FIA to show more consistency in its rulings.
