Christian Horner Urges F1 To Raise 2026 Budget Cap Limits
TO NEWS OVERVIEW
Mercedes boss Toto Wolff and Williams counterpart James Vowles disagree on the topic

Former Red Bull boss Christian Horner has stated that Formula 1 should raise its budget cap from 215 million dollars, claiming that teams are effectively spending between 500 and 600 million dollars overall. The cost cap was initially introduced in 2021 at 145 million dollars before being bumped up to 215 million dollars for 2026 due to sweeping regulatory changes.

However, the strict financial regulations do not cover every aspect of a constructor's spending. Elements such as driver contracts, the salaries of the top three highest-paid non-driver employees, global travel expenses, and marketing activities are notably excluded from the initial budget cap framework. Additionally, the sport operates a completely separate power unit cost cap with 190 million dollars allocated specifically for engine manufacturers.

Reflecting on the evolution of the regulations, Horner noted to Autosport that early compliance challenges would look entirely different under current tightening measures. He compared team spending to a squeezed balloon, explaining that restricting costs in one area simply shifts financial resources elsewhere, resulting in significantly healthier driver retainers compared to the pre-cap era.

The debate over financial fairness has also drawn comments from Williams team principal James Vowles, who previously advocated for a sliding-scale cost cap to better support outfits further down the constructors' standings. Despite ongoing criticisms regarding pre-existing world-class infrastructure at powerhouse squads, the cost cap mechanism has successfully transformed modern participants into highly stable, multi-billion-dollar franchise assets.
