Former Red Bull team principal Christian Horner has revealed that his squad held confidential talks with Lewis Hamilton back in 2012, just months prior to his landmark career-defining transfer to Mercedes. This stunning revelation comes directly from Horner's autobiography titled Drive, shedding light on a hidden chapter of Formula 1 history.
The sequence of events was sparked when Hamilton reportedly grew disillusioned with McLaren amidst a frustrating series of reliability issues and mechanical failures throughout the 2012 campaign. According to Horner, a phone call from Hamilton’s father, Anthony Hamilton, set up a clandestine gathering at Adrian Newey’s private residence near Ascot, where the driver expressed a clear desire to jump ship.
"Lewis Hamilton seemed to be losing heart at McLaren," Horner wrote in his book, highlighting the unexpected vulnerability shown by the former world champion during their secret rendezvous. Hamilton directly asked the management what it would take to join their ranks, instantly captivating the technical mastermind Newey with the tantalizing prospect of pairing him alongside Sebastian Vettel.

Despite the immense temptation, the blockbuster deal ultimately fell through due to staggering financial demands required to accommodate two elite world champions simultaneously, alongside existing team dynamics. Horner noted that Hamilton was already an iconic commercial and driving powerhouse, making him an ideal challenger at the time.
As reported by Motorsport Week, this near-miss transfer remains one of the greatest "what-if" scenarios in modern motorsport history, as Hamilton ultimately chose the Silver Arrows path to cement an unprecedented era of dominance in Formula 1.
