Christian Horner Blames Mateschitz Death for Brutal Red Bull F1 Exit

More than a year after his abrupt exit from the Red Bull Racing pitwall in July 2025, former team principal Christian Horner has finally shed light on the exact circumstances surrounding his dismissal. In an interview, the 52-year-old executive stripped away paddock rumours and placed the blame squarely on a massive corporate power shift following the passing of Red Bull billionaire founder Dietrich Mateschitz in late 2022.

Despite guiding the squad through two separate eras of intense Formula 1 dominance—first with Sebastian Vettel and later with Max Verstappen, collecting multiple constructors and drivers titles—Horner claims the new Austrian leadership group ousted him without providing concrete justification, feeling that too much control was concentrated in his hands.

Horner explicitly denied rumours that internal friction with Verstappen or his outspoken father directly led to his firing, clarifying that it was entirely a corporate Red Bull decision driven by the shift in leadership after Mateschitz passed away.

The timing was extraordinarily traumatic on a personal level, occurring just days after the mother of his daughter passed away following a battle with eye cancer. Given his personal grieving process and his foundational work establishing the Red Bull Powertrains division, Horner admitted the clinical nature of his firing was deeply painful and difficult to process immediately.

Taking a thinly veiled shot at the current Red Bull regime spearheaded by Oliver Mintzlaff and his replacement Laurent Mekies, Horner suggested loyalty and grace are rapidly vanishing from the modern Formula 1 landscape, noting that not all teams operate with integrity.
