Charles Leclerc Flags Hamilton Gap at Silverstone

Charles Leclerc admitted Ferrari's Sprint Qualifying performance at the British Grand Prix came as a major surprise after Lewis Hamilton claimed Sprint pole while he could only secure fourth.

Hamilton set the pace from the opening practice session through all three phases of Sprint Qualifying before taking the front spot for the Sprint. Leclerc ended SQ3 0.327s behind his team-mate, with Kimi Antonelli and Max Verstappen also ahead of the Monegasque driver.

The result exposed two contrasting elements within Ferrari's performance at Silverstone. Hamilton's pace underlined that the car had more competitiveness than the team expected, but Leclerc said he was still unable to extract its full potential consistently, particularly in the decisive SQ3 runs.

"We are extremely surprised with Lewis taking pole," Leclerc said.

Leclerc explained that the issue was not only linked to outright pace, but also to the confidence required to take the car to its limit. He said Hamilton was more often able to reach the car's maximum potential, while he was still missing the ease and feeling he had with last year's machinery.

"I don't have the ease I had with last year's car," Leclerc said. "Lewis is more often at 100% potential of the car, which I am not."

That contrast leaves Ferrari with both a positive signal and a clear technical priority heading into the Sprint. Hamilton's pole suggests the package can be competitive at Silverstone, but Leclerc must recover feel, consistency and confidence if he is to put pressure on Ferrari's immediate rivals in the next competitive phase of the weekend.
