Heading into the United States Grand Prix, Charles Leclerc has openly identified a fundamental performance deficit in Ferrari's 2026 Formula 1 challenger. As the Scuderia prepares to introduce its largest upgrade package of the season, the Monegasque driver emphasizes that the team's ongoing struggles stem from the raw potential of the car rather than any setup deficiencies during race weekends.
Ferrari has frequently shown competitive pace during Friday practice sessions, only to slip backwards relative to its rivals once qualifying commences. According to Leclerc, this recurring pattern is heavily influenced by the aggressive engine modes deployed by opposing teams when the competitive stakes rise on Saturday afternoons.
“I’m not sure we are particularly good on Fridays,” Leclerc admitted. “I mean we are, but I believe it comes more from the engine modes that others are running, and once we come to qualifying, they just have something that we don’t.” Despite this shortfall, he praised the factory team in Maranello for delivering a well-balanced car straight out of the box thanks to strong simulator correlation.

Rather than lacking cornering agility, Leclerc argues that changing the car's core characteristics to make it more peaky will not unlock additional speed. The fundamental power unit and aerodynamic package simply lag behind their main adversaries. With a new floor, sidepods, and bodywork scheduled to debut in Austin, the Italian outfit hopes to swing its competitive pendulum upward against contenders like Max Verstappen.
“The raw potential of the car is not at the level of our main competitors, but I don’t think making it more peaky will be able to extract anything more,” he concluded, as the team looks to solidify its standing in the constructors' championship.
