The final round of the 2026 World Sportbike season at the Circuito de Jerez – Angel Nieto got underway on Friday morning with an intensely competitive opening free practice session. Carter Thompson immediately set the pace, topping the timesheet aboard his Yamaha YZF-R7.
The Australian rider clocked a blistering lap time of 1'46.905, edging out his closest rival by an extremely narrow margin. David Salvador finished just 0,014 seconds behind the pace-setter to claim the second-fastest time of the morning.
Local Spanish contenders strongly established their presence at the front of the field, with Jose Osuna taking third position, Alvaro Fuertes following in fourth, and Xavi Artigas rounding out the top five performers.

Meanwhile, Belgian competitor Ferre Fleerackers delivered a solid performance to finish eleventh fastest, ending the session 0.802 seconds adrift of the benchmark time set at the top of the leaderboard.
Attention from the Dutch contingent focused heavily on the trio representing the Netherlands at Jerez. Jeffrey Buis managed to secure the thirteenth position with a lap time of 1'47.715.
Jurrien van Crugten placed eighteenth overall, while Indi Schunselaar ended up twenty-seventh. Schunselaar is once again stepping in to substitute for Kas Beekmans, who recently retired from competition.
The weekend's action is notably missing Loris Veneman, who continues his recovery from a broken forearm sustained during a heavy crash at the previous round in Cremona, prematurely ending his racing campaign.
