Nicolo Bulega has insisted he will not alter his approach to the WorldSBK weekend at Cremona, despite suffering a heavy crash during a MotoGP test at Mugello last week. The Italian rider remains focused on winning races and securing the championship.
Bulega currently leads the standings by 146 points over Iker Lecuona, the only rider still mathematically in contention. With a near-perfect season—taking pole position at every race and winning 26 of 27 races—Bulega is in a commanding position to clinch the title on home soil.
However, the Mugello crash raised concerns. Speaking to MotoGP.com, Bulega downplayed the incident: “Just a crash. Sometimes can happen. Was big because at Arrabbiata 2, 150kph – not bad. But fortunately I’m okay.” He was taken to hospital afterward as a precaution.
Looking ahead to Cremona, Bulega admitted the track is not one where he feels entirely comfortable. “Honestly, I would like to not change my approach to the race weekend, I always try to win races,” he said. “But we will see because this is a strange track for me. Last year I was fast but I always have to think too much when I ride in this track. If I have the speed to win I will try, but if someone will be faster I will try to close the championship.”
In terms of title permutations, Bulega’s situation is far more favorable than two weeks ago at Magny-Cours, where Lecuona only needed to finish ninth in Race 1 to prevent Bulega from winning the title in France. Now, Lecuona must outscore Bulega by 23 points over the three races at Cremona to extend the fight to Estoril.
With only three races remaining and a massive points advantage, Bulega has a golden opportunity to claim his first world title. Yet he remains cautious and unwilling to rush. His mature approach—focusing on race results rather than points calculations—has been key to his success this season.
If Bulega seals the title at Cremona, he will become the first Italian WorldSBK champion since Max Biaggi in 2012. The achievement would be even sweeter in front of his home crowd. Regardless of the outcome, Bulega has demonstrated remarkable dominance throughout the 2026 season.
