Martin Brundle has praised Max Verstappen for his recovery from a high-speed spin on the opening lap of the Formula 1 Miami Grand Prix 2026. The former Formula 1 driver described the incident as a display of “genius” level car control under extreme conditions.

The incident occurred at Turn 2 while Verstappen battled Charles Leclerc for the lead. After being squeezed towards the apex, the Red Bull Racing driver lost control due to aggressive throttle application and completed a full 360-degree spin in the middle of the pack.

Despite losing positions, Verstappen managed to minimise the consequences by keeping the car aligned with the circuit and maintaining forward momentum. Technically, such a recovery requires extremely precise coordination between throttle, brake modulation, steering input, and clutch control within a very limited time window.

“Before that we saw some of his genius in the recovery.”

“He used the throttle, brakes, and steering wheel brilliantly to complete a full 360-degree spin while still pointing the car down the racetrack.”

Brundle highlighted the difficulty of executing such a manoeuvre, particularly with the current generation of Formula 1 cars, which are larger, heavier, and carrying maximum fuel loads at the start of races. In those conditions, avoiding contact from following cars becomes exceptionally challenging.

“I can’t tell you how hard that is in these large Formula 1 cars full of fuel in the heat of battle.”

“It dramatically reduced the chances of him being collected by another driver.”

After rejoining in ninth place, Verstappen launched an aggressive recovery drive through the midfield. Red Bull later opted for an early pit stop on lap seven to switch to hard tyres under a Safety Car period triggered by separate incidents.

Despite the chaotic opening phase, Verstappen still converted the race into a competitive fifth-place finish. The performance once again highlighted the combination of car control, rapid adaptation, and race management that has defined the four-time world champion throughout the modern ground effect era.
