The dramatic formation lap chaos at the Bahrain Grand Prix left Martin Brundle offering a blunt assessment of the unprecedented grid meltdown. Heavy rain had already delayed the initial start, but the real drama unfolded once the cars finally rolled out onto the wet asphalt.
Multiple machines ground to a halt or cut out entirely due to an unforeseen software bug from the governing body. Standard regulation settings proved completely incapable of handling the ultra-slow speeds dictated by the treacherous wet conditions.
"We started seeing a number of cars travelling very slowly and then stopping altogether, except for the Safety Car which continued at normal pace, increasingly out by itself," Brundle noted in his column.

The electronic glitch wreaked havoc across multiple power unit manufacturers, stranding drivers around the circuit as they desperately attempted to reboot their complex machinery. Brundle pointed out that the issue struck a wide array of competitors across the grid during their first wet running experience.
"Many of the six Ferrari-powered cars seemed affected, some Red Bull Powertrains and a McLaren Mercedes too," Brundle explained, highlighting how the standard FIA 'brain' required for regulatory parity failed to compute with cars crawling at such minimal speeds.
The sheer confusion forced officials to abort the start completely as stranded drivers were left stranded on the tarmac. Brundle described the comical and chaotic sight of drivers effectively needing to reboot their power units manually on track.
"Drivers at the side of the track effectively having to hit the control/alt/delete to restart their motors. It was chaos and the Safety Car was about to lap many cars," Brundle wrote regarding the unprecedented grid stoppage.
Following a 40-minute red flag period which allowed both the weather to clear and teams to install a crucial software patch, officials opted to reset the original grid order. Despite the initial headaches, Brundle ultimately praised the governing body for making a sporting and fair decision.
