Will Brown has revealed the story behind the controversial restrictor that became the symbol of his first win of the season at the Ipswich Super440. The 49mm restrictor, which did not meet specifications, was obtained through a unique deal with Supercars—not by chance.
Ahead of the race weekend at Queensland Raceway, Triple Eight Race Engineering discovered that Will Brown had been running a 49mm restrictor instead of the 50mm unit prescribed for the Ford Mustang. This finding became a major talking point, especially after Brown stormed to victory in Saturday night's race—his first win in a year.
The restrictor had already become part of the narrative on Friday when Mark Larkham presented it to Brown as a sort of trophy during the live broadcast. The highlight came during the podium ceremony, where Brown drank champagne through it—an unusual sight that quickly became a hot topic.

Even more unusual is how Brown came into possession of the component, which is owned by Supercars. According to him, he used it as a bargaining chip to agree to an interview with Fox Sports presenter Jess Yates, which aired on Saturday. "They wanted me to do a TV interview, and I said, 'I'll do it if I get the restrictor given to me'," Brown explained.
Brown then detailed his negotiation with Nathan Pendergast, Supercars' TV boss. "I said, 'We did the interview, I want the restrictor'. Luckily enough, he made it happen and they gave it to me on TV on Friday," he added. After receiving it, Brown promised his media manager Ainslie McCormick and manager Dave Ellis that he would bring it to the track and, if he won, he would drink champagne through it on the podium.
"It's sort of a fairytale to get that win today, to take that restrictor up there and get to drink through it, which was cool," Brown said, joking, "It still had a bad flow rate, but I was able to make it work."
This win is a significant momentum shift for Brown, who struggled for competitiveness early in the season. He will now look to build on this performance in Sunday's race, which features qualifying, the Top 10 Shootout, and a 200-kilometre main race.
