Iker Lecuona will return to MotoGP as a substitute for Fermin Aldeguer at Gresini Racing for the 2026 British MotoGP at Silverstone, with Aldeguer not yet ready to return to racing.
Aldeguer has not raced since crashing during practice at Assen at the end of June. He subsequently missed the Dutch races as well as the German MotoGP, which concluded the first half of the season before the summer break.
Gresini confirmed on 31 July that Aldeguer will sit out the 12th round of the MotoGP World Championship at Silverstone as a precaution while his recovery continues. The team also confirmed that the Spaniard has received medical clearance to resume training from 15 August.
“Fermín Aldeguer will not compete at Silverstone for the 12th round of the MotoGP World Championship. The Spanish rider will remain on the sidelines as a precaution. However, he has received medical clearance to resume training from August 15,” Gresini said in its statement.
Lecuona earns another opportunity after previously replacing Alex Marquez at the 2026 Hungarian MotoGP. In his first MotoGP race since 2023, he finished seventh and demonstrated an ability to adapt quickly to the Ducati package.
Since that appearance, Lecuona has also claimed his first world championship race victory in WorldSBK Race 1 at Donington in early July. The result ended team-mate Nicolo Bulega’s winning streak and was followed by confirmation of a new two-year Ducati contract keeping Lecuona with the manufacturer until the end of 2028.
Gresini will therefore head into the 2026 British MotoGP with Lecuona standing in for Aldeguer. With clearance to resume training in mid-August, Aldeguer could potentially return when MotoGP continues at Aragon on 28–30 August.
