Flavio Briatore has thrown his support behind Fred Vasseur, insisting that the intense scrutiny faced by the Ferrari team principal is much harder than that endured by his rivals on the Formula 1 grid. Briatore's comments arrive with Vasseur in the spotlight following Ferrari's dip in form, where Lewis Hamilton finishing third in the Bahrain Grand Prix in Malaysia marked the team's first podium finish in six races.

Speculation around Vasseur's future intensified further after Red Bull boss Christian Horner recently described the Ferrari team principal role as a dream job, while Italian media reported friction between the Frenchman and CEO Benedetto Vigna over Hamilton's integration into the wider structure.

Ferrari's senior leadership, including executive chairman John Elkann and Vigna, moved to shut down the noise with an emergency press briefing last week via chief communications officer Maria Conti, reiterating full confidence in Vasseur. Vasseur stated that he remains in daily contact with both men and denied that his autonomy is restricted.

Alpine boss Briatore, who knows what it is like to face severe scrutiny after the 2008 'Crashgate' scandal when he was in charge of Renault, explained that the nature of F1 coverage means questions become much more pointed once results begin to dip. The media looks at every failure because they stay quiet when you do well, but wake up instantly when things go bad, meaning teams simply have to live with that reality.

Briatore added that the attention level makes the situation significantly harder for Fred compared to other teams due to the sheer volume of articles and media spotlight. Echoing that sentiment, Williams team principal James Vowles highlighted the unique volatility of judgment directed at whoever occupies the Maranello hot seat.

Vowles acknowledged that while every team principal knows their job is always on the line if performance falls short, the extreme contrast between how success is celebrated and failure is punished sets Ferrari apart. Vowles concluded that the external narrative and criticism directed at Vasseur and his predecessors tend to reach much higher highs and much lower lows than anywhere else on the grid.
