Flavio Briatore, Executive Advisor for Alpine, delivered a blunt assessment of Franco Colapinto's incident at the Formula 1 Azerbaijan Grand Prix. The crash not only ruined the team's weekend but also raised questions about the Argentine driver's future.
Alpine showed promise in Baku, with Colapinto and teammate Pierre Gasly both reaching Q3 and starting in the top 10. However, their hopes were dashed when a Safety Car period bunched the field. On the restart, Colapinto made an aggressive move that resulted in contact with Lando Norris, ending the races of all three drivers and damaging Gasly's chances as well.
Colapinto took full responsibility and apologised to both the team and McLaren, but the incident became a major talking point. Opinions were divided among fans and drivers. The most significant comment came from Briatore, who expressed his disappointment on Instagram.
"These sorts of incidents shouldn't happen, particularly when we were running well with both cars," Briatore wrote. He also apologised to the team, Gasly, and Norris and McLaren for ruining their races. "I know that Franco has taken full responsibility for it. As he should," he added.
Briatore's remarks have sparked speculation about Colapinto's participation in the next race in Malaysia. The Italian emphasised that the team must look ahead and ensure such mistakes do not happen again. "We now have to look ahead and make sure these things do not happen in the future," he said.
The incident is a setback for Alpine, who are fighting to improve their performance in the 2026 season. Losing potential points in Azerbaijan could impact their constructors' championship position. Moreover, it also ruined Norris's race, as he battles for the drivers' title.
With the Malaysian Grand Prix looming, pressure is mounting on Colapinto to prove he can learn from his mistake and drive more disciplined. Alpine's decision on his future will be closely watched, given the importance of stability and consistent results in the remainder of the season.
