Flavio Briatore is not letting Alpine dwell on their Azerbaijan Grand Prix disappointment. The collision between Franco Colapinto and Pierre Gasly was a bitter pill to swallow, but the team principal insists that the past is the past. Speaking at the Sepang International Circuit on Friday, he made it clear that his team must focus on the Malaysian Grand Prix this weekend.
The incident in Baku occurred when Colapinto, in his eagerness to make up positions, took out his own teammate. As a result, the Argentine driver received a five-place grid penalty for the Malaysian race. This punishment further hampers Alpine's chances in their tight battle for fifth place in the Constructors' Championship with Racing Bulls. The lost points from Azerbaijan could prove costly, but Briatore refuses to dwell on what might have been.
"Whatever we do is internal to the team," Briatore told the media. "Sure, I was very disappointed when it happened in Baku, but it's another race. Everybody forgets, you know. We need to keep looking always for the future, and the past is the past, and nothing can be done."

Briatore admitted that he and the entire team, including Colapinto, were frustrated by the mistake. However, he stressed the importance of moving forward. "I was upset, yes, like I believe everybody in the team was, including Franco, for the mistake he made. But this is the past. We need to go ahead and think about the future, talking about the race today, the qualifying tomorrow, and the race on Sunday. And every race is a different scenario."
Despite his resolve, Briatore couldn't hide his disappointment over the lost points. "Last weekend was not nice for us at all, and we are fighting for the fifth position with Racing Bulls. We give away a lot of points. After that, it's finito. What can we do? Whatever we've done, it's impossible to come back."
Interestingly, Briatore then turned his attention to the stewards' decision, which he found inconsistent. He compared the Colapinto-Gasly incident with the collision between Arvid Lindblad and Liam Lawson of Racing Bulls in Baku. According to him, Lindblad did exactly the same thing but escaped a penalty. "Coming back to Baku, something I really, really don't understand is this: we were penalised, and we deserve to be penalised. I don't understand why Racing Bull was not penalised, because Lindblad had done exactly the same to Lawson. Why were we penalised and Lindblad was not penalised?"
Briatore's questioning highlights a broader dissatisfaction with penalty consistency in Formula 1. However, he knows that his protests won't change the outcome. Now, his focus is on maximizing Alpine's potential in Malaysia. With Colapinto's grid penalty, the team must devise a clever strategy to still score points. Gasly, on the other hand, will aim to deliver a strong performance to help the team in their constructors' battle.
Alpine are in a tough spot, but Briatore is known as a fighter who never gives up. He wants his team to learn from their mistakes and bounce back. The Malaysian Grand Prix is an opportunity to prove they can still compete. "We need to keep going and think about the future," he asserted. With the challenging Sepang circuit ahead, Alpine must find their best form if they are to keep their hopes alive in the constructors' championship.
