The Formula 1 race weekend at Autodromo Jose Carlos Pace Interlagos delivered another layer of high tension after George Russell suffered a bizarre mistake right at the exit of the pit lane. A strategic gamble to swap from intermediate tires onto soft slicks on a still-damp racing surface turned into a nightmare scenario for the British driver.
The unique layout of the pit-lane exit in Brazil runs alongside the iconic 'S' section of turns one, two, and three, featuring a steep downhill slope and an extremely narrow passage. This treacherous combination of wet asphalt and cold slick tires caused the Mercedes W17 to lose rear grip instantaneously as it accelerated away from the team's garage.
Consequently, the sixty-third car spun completely around in the confined space, nearly triggering a head-on collision with oncoming competitors exiting the pit lane behind him. The sudden blockage forced rival drivers into emergency evasive maneuvers within a fraction of a second to avoid a major pile-up.

Trapped in the narrow corridor, the Mercedes driver had to perform desperate multi-point steering maneuvers to turn the car around, scraping the right-hand side against the outer concrete wall multiple times in the process. He eventually managed to point his machine forward and rejoin the active track.
The blunder dealt a heavy blow to his race standing, dropping him dramatically from a strong third place down to eighth position as he fought to salvage points. Read our in-depth analysis to understand how this unfolded.
