Max Biaggi could not hide his pride. The WorldSBK legend called Nicolo Bulega's 2026 title triumph the moment that cured his longing for an Italian at the top of the standings. "Finally, another Italian!" he told WorldSBK.com.
Bulega was indeed outstanding throughout the season. Of the 30 races held so far, he won 26 and secured nine of ten pole positions. Such dominance not only made him champion but also marked him as the second Italian rider ever to win the WorldSBK crown after Biaggi.
"Of course I’m happy, big congratulations to Nicolo. After 14 years, my last one was in 2012, and it’s now 2026. I was feeling really lonely. Now, with him, I’m feeling much happier," Biaggi said. He also admitted he can't wait to see Bulega race in MotoGP next season.
Interestingly, their career paths are opposite. Biaggi first shone in MotoGP in the 2000s before moving to WorldSBK in 2007 and winning two titles. Meanwhile, Bulega chose to complete his mission in WorldSBK first, then step up to the premier class. Now, both share a unique distinction: being an Italian WorldSBK world champion.
For Biaggi, Bulega's success is not just about talent. "When you win the title in that way and dominate, I think it’s a combination of talent, ability and machine on the technical side. Ducati have dominated that championship, but even if there are other riders on that machine, big congratulations for what he did. When you win so many races, there’s no doubt," he explained.
Bulega's title also shares similarities with Biaggi's first: an Italian rider on an Italian bike at an Italian track. "You cannot ask for more when you win in your home country, in front of your fans. There’s no better way to do it. He will remember that day forever. I say this from experience because I did it and I remember. This will stay in his mind forever," Biaggi concluded.
