Marco Bezzecchi has dismissed concerns over Jorge Martin's lowly position in MotoGP practice for the San Marino Grand Prix, insisting his Aprilia teammate will bounce back in qualifying on Saturday.
Bezzecchi was in stunning form on Friday, narrowly missing the lap record on the factory RS-GP, while Martin could only manage 10th, clinging onto the final Q2 spot after struggling for pace throughout the day. The situation was even worse at satellite team Trackhouse, with Raul Fernandez down in 12th and Ai Ogura absent due to injury.
“It's only Friday, don't worry. You'll see that they'll all be there tomorrow,” Bezzecchi said, as quoted by Motorsport.com. “We're trying to focus on ourselves, working as hard as we can in the pit, and we'll try to figure out everything we can improve. We'll see what the others are doing when the time comes.”
Martin, meanwhile, admitted he was “completely on the limit” during his time attack but lost time due to discomfort with Michelin's soft rear tyre. “In the morning, I felt really good with the medium tyre. The bike was performing exactly how I wanted it to, and I was close to the front,” he explained. “I knew that in the afternoon, the feeling might change with the soft tyre, so I started with that compound from the beginning, and it was confirmed. I felt even worse than I expected.”
The Spaniard added that the soft-tyre issues have plagued him since the start of the season. “These are problems I've had since the beginning of the year. With the soft tire, I struggle more than the others in time attacks. We're going to work on it with the team.” Despite this, he believes he has more speed to unlock and that his potential at Misano is higher than his fifth-place finish at Aragon.
Ducati riders, in contrast, were competitive over a single lap on Friday, with four Desmosedici machines inside the top five. Francesco Bagnaia was the only Ducati rider to miss out on Q2 through lack of outright pace, while Fermin Aldeguer's final run was hampered by a technical issue.
With Bezzecchi flying the flag for Aprilia at Misano, he remains optimistic that the team can challenge Ducati provided they focus on their own improvements. Saturday's qualifying will be the true test for Martin and Fernandez to prove they can still be contenders.
