Marco Bezzecchi once again proved his worth as Aprilia's development spearhead. At the Red Bull Ring, the Italian rider tested a new tail unit on the RS-GP26, a move that underscores Noale's determination to keep the pressure on Ducati in the 2026 MotoGP title race.
This was no mere formality. Bezzecchi, known for his high sensitivity to technical changes, was entrusted with evaluating the latest aerodynamic solution. He worked closely with test rider Lorenzo Savadori, ensuring every piece of data collected was valid before passing it on to the other factory rider, Jorge Martin.
The new tail unit features two additional flaps mounted ahead of the two-element rear wing supports. These curved profiles create a flow interaction with the rear wing assembly, similar to a concept previously seen on Marc Marquez's Ducati Desmosedici. The goal is clear: clean up the airflow around the tail, improve aerodynamic efficiency on the straights, and add a small amount of local downforce when the bike is leaned over.
Aprilia's decision to continue developing the RS-GP26 amid the focus on the 2027 850cc regulations shows their seriousness. The team led by Massimo Rivola wants to maximize every opportunity against Ducati's dominance. Currently, Martin leads the standings by 12 points over Marquez, while Bezzecchi sits third, 42 points adrift.
Interestingly, Aprilia is the only manufacturer capable of adapting its bike to the specific characteristics of individual circuits. Technical director Fabiano Sterlacchini is managing the group working on next year's 850cc Aprilia, while development of the current bike continues in parallel. This demonstrates solid resource management and long-term vision.
Bezzecchi himself has been the backbone of development since last year. His working relationship with Savadori is tight, and his ability to evaluate new solutions has made him the trusted leader of the manufacturer's direction. Martin, on the other hand, prefers to wait before adopting solutions his teammate has already approved. He has complete faith in Bezzecchi's ability, but wants to ensure maximum confidence before using them in a race.
With the title fight intensifying, every aerodynamic detail could make the difference. This new tail test is a signal that Aprilia will not give up in the duel against Ducati. If the solution proves effective, it's not impossible that Bezzecchi and Martin will pose an even greater threat at the remaining circuits.
