Marco Bezzecchi smashed the lap record at Misano to secure pole position for the MotoGP San Marino Grand Prix, beating Marc Marquez in a tense Q2 duel. The Aprilia rider became the first to dip below 1m30s with a 1m29.982s, clinching his second consecutive pole.
The stage was set after Friday's running, with Bezzecchi and Marquez trading fastest times. But in Q2, Bezzecchi had the edge. Marquez, on the factory Ducati, made several mistakes while pushing, including a massive headshake through the fast Curvone that forced him to abort his first flying lap.
Alex Marquez on the Gresini Ducati initially set the pace with a 1m30.733s before crashing moments later. Marc Marquez then took top spot with a 1m30.504s, but Bezzecchi responded. Six tenths up in the third sector, the Italian hooked up a perfect lap to take provisional pole.
Marquez pushed hard but another error at the start of his second run left him with a 1m30.180s, 0.198s adrift. Fermin Aldeguer completed the front row with a late 1m30.350s, demoting VR46's Fabio Di Giannantonio to fourth after his late crash at Turn 4.
Championship leader Jorge Martin was fifth on the other factory Aprilia, ahead of Luca Marini as the top Honda. Pedro Acosta (KTM) was seventh, followed by Franco Morbidelli (VR46) and Alex Marquez, who crashed for a second time at the end of Q2. Raul Fernandez (Trackhouse Aprilia) completed the top ten after advancing from Q1.
Fabio Quartararo was the leading Yamaha in 13th, beating a struggling Pecco Bagnaia on the second factory Ducati. Johann Zarco (LCR Honda) and Pol Espargaro (Tech3) rounded out the top 12. The stage is set for a thrilling race on Sunday.
