A shock at MotorLand Aragon! Marco Bezzecchi produced a stunning performance to snatch pole position for the 2026 Aragon MotoGP Grand Prix, breaking the lap record and pipping Marc Marquez in a thrilling qualifying session on Saturday morning.
Going into the weekend, many expected Marquez to dominate, having never lost pole at Aragon since joining Ducati. But Bezzecchi had other ideas. On his Aprilia, he became the first rider ever to lap the Aragon circuit in the 1m44s bracket – a historic achievement.
Bezzecchi’s best time of 1m44.962s put him 0.089s clear of Marquez, who had to settle for second. The top two were in a league of their own, leaving Alex Marquez in third, more than two tenths behind. Championship leader Jorge Martin could only manage fifth after a scrappy session.
The qualifying was dramatic from the start. Alex Marquez initially set the benchmark, but Marc Marquez soon blasted to the top with a 1m45.136s, well under the lap record he had set on Friday. However, Bezzecchi responded immediately. His first flying lap was already a historic 1m44.984s, and he improved to 1m44.962s on his final run.
The pressure got to Marquez on his last two attempts. He ran wide at Turn 1 on the first lap of his second run, but still managed a 1m45.051s to secure second. On his final lap, he nearly crashed at Turn 14 after being just 0.013s up through sector two, ending his hopes of pole.
Behind them, Raul Fernandez took fourth on the Trackhouse Aprilia, with Martin a further half a second back in fifth. Pedro Acosta was sixth for KTM despite a late crash at Turn 9.
Full Results and Implications
This result gives Bezzecchi a golden opportunity to claim his first premier-class victory and boost his championship campaign. Marquez, meanwhile, will need to find a way past his rival in the race. With such a slim margin, a fierce battle is guaranteed at Aragon.
