Marco Bezzecchi stole the spotlight in MotoGP Practice at Aragon by breaking the circuit lap record. The Aprilia rider edged out Alex Marquez from the top of the timing sheets by a tiny 0.010-second margin. A strong signal that the fight at MotorLand will be intense.
Since joining Ducati, Marc Marquez has been the fastest at Aragon every time he has taken to the track. That trend seemed set to continue when he broke his own lap record late in the session. But Marco Bezzecchi had other ideas.
With a 1m45.455s lap set two minutes before the chequered flag, Bezzecchi snatched the top spot. Alex Marquez, impressive on his Gresini Ducati, had to settle for second, just one hundredth of a second behind. Meanwhile, Marc Marquez had to drop to third.
Bad news came from the Ducati Lenovo camp. Pecco Bagnaia could only manage 13th and will have to go through Q1 on Saturday morning. He will be joined by Enea Bastianini and Luca Marini in the fight for a Q2 spot.
Another surprise came from Johann Zarco, who put in a stellar performance on the LCR Honda. The Frenchman snatched a top-ten spot in the final minutes, just after returning from injury following his heavy crash at the Catalan GP. Fermin Aldeguer, also returning from injury, impressed in fifth.
Jorge Martin, the championship leader, had to settle for seventh, while Pedro Acosta was the only KTM rider to go directly to Q2. Yamaha failed to get a rider into the top ten, with Fabio Quartararo their best in 14th.
