Marco Bezzecchi admitted he was "super lucky" to avoid a high-side during the first practice session (FP1) of the Japanese MotoGP at Motegi. The Aprilia Racing rider nearly lost control of his RS-GP at Turn 11, the same spot where Takaaki Nakagami crashed and broke his collarbone.
The incident occurred when the track was dry but light rain was falling. Bezzecchi explained that he saw the asphalt looked slightly darker at Turn 11, but because it was new, he wasn't sure if it was a characteristic or wet. "I realised it was wet when the bike was sideways, so I was super lucky," he said.
Bezzecchi's 2026 season has been one of contrasts. On one hand, he took dominant victories in the first three races and at Mugello, plus impressive rides at Silverstone and Aragon despite being injured. On the other hand, he has crashed several times, notably at Assen and in Sachsenring qualifying, which caused injuries.

The Motegi incident served as a reminder of the high-side risk that could significantly impact his championship position. Currently, he is in a tight battle at the top, and any incident could harm his title chances. The Italian chose to be more cautious and returned to the pits to compose himself.
"I went straight to the box and said, 'Okay, let's wait a bit because I've already had enough this season,'" he added. He also expressed sympathy for Nakagami's injury. "It's a big shame for Taka, especially as a Japanese rider and his presence is important for the fans here. I wish him a speedy recovery."
Turn 11 has been a talking point as it is known to be difficult and has claimed victims, especially in uncertain track conditions. With unstable weather at Motegi, riders must be more vigilant. Bezzecchi himself admitted he doesn't know how he saved the bike, calling it pure luck.
Bezzecchi's luck could be a crucial point in the remainder of the season. With 15 rounds gone, he still has a chance to fight at the front, as long as he avoids unnecessary crashes. The Aprilia Racing team is expected to provide better technical support to address any issues.
The race at Motegi will test Bezzecchi's focus and consistency. If he can capitalise on his luck and perform at his best, a return to the podium and a stronger championship position is not out of the question.
